Believe it or not, I signed up to do the 2008 Eagleman HIM and had not even once gotten in the pool. I figured "how hard can it be to learn to swim?" I was so wrong. It took me a month before I could swim over the deep end of the pool comfortably. You think you hate swimming, I know I do. I'm working on thinking more positively about that and I have to say that by the end of the race swim last Sunday, I could see where swimming could be alright once I get the hang of it and feel comfortable.

It wasn't the distance, it was the start. I did a sprint with a beach start and I was fine. But the 'in the water' start at Mountaineer did not agree with me at all. Plus it was on the chilly side that day. Once I freaked and hyperventilated, I had a really hard time getting back to normal. I really didn't think I'd be able to do it.
Another two pieces of advice I got from experienced triathletes that helped me was to 'treat it like a training day' that keeps you from stressing because it's a race. And to 'focus on the task at hand' that keeps you from getting overwhelmed especially at the beginning, or even more so right after the swim where you've been so traumatized : } and you're tired and you just want to call it day!
What race is GTC? My next even is the Mt Mama century ride and then the Patriot Olympic distance in Williamsburg in September.
I keep thinking about this half in western Maryland called Savageman. I'm so tempted to try it...but my husband keeps counseling me to stick to sprints and olys my first year..Missyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03818434027352724957noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7606083241093872357.post-29550654599192213722008-07-03T15:08:00.000-04:002008-07-03T15:08:00.000-04:00This comment has been removed by the author.Missyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03818434027352724957noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7606083241093872357.post-66978230328674345512008-07-02T21:42:00.000-04:002008-07-02T21:42:00.000-04:00you probably could finish the half but no sense in...you probably could finish the half but no sense in killing yourself. the olympic is still fun and tough. next year pick your half and it's yours.Brianhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04023532269999535335noreply@blogger.com
